The recent incident at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, where Galgotias University showcased an AI-driven robotic dog “Orion” reportedly resembling the Unitree Go2, has raised serious concerns about transparency in academic innovation and respect for intellectual property.

𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘀’ 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 — 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻
While the university has reportedly clarified (via PTI) that it did not build the hardware from scratch but instead integrated AI features into an existing platform, the initial public presentation created a different impression. This discrepancy has understandably triggered debate around disclosure practices and academic ethics.

In today’s ecosystem of patents, copyrights, and technology licensing, institutions must exercise extreme care in how innovations are presented. Even unintentional ambiguity can affect institutional credibility and the broader perception of India’s research ecosystem.

𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝘂𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲
If external hardware platforms are used, best practice requires:

• clear attribution and licensing transparency
• precise communication of the institution’s original contribution
• timely IP evaluation and protection of genuine innovations

Robotics leaders globally invest heavily in R&D, and respect for prior innovation is foundational to healthy technological progress.
